One of my favorite quotes from Anne Lamott's new book (in which she herself is quoting someone) is that no one gets into heaven without a letter of reference from the poor. If not literally true, certainly a good reminder of what we ought to be doing with our time and money.

That quote is awesome and very sobering. I wonder if it's not closer to being literally true than we would want to admit. In the parable of the sheep and the goats (Matthew 25) Jesus said, "when you cared for the least of these my brothers you cared for me." The letter of reference may actually be a letter of reference from Christ who was in disguise as the poor.
