It's a cool, overcast January Sunday morning in Marin County. Many of our fellow Marinites will wake up in their Tahoe cabins in anticipation of a day of skiing/boarding on this Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. The rest of us will sort through a variety of Sunday options.
I am preparing to go to church, which also happens to be my work. I have awakened at my normal, early time in order to prepare myself for the morning of leading worship and pastoring people. I have prayed for those who I will be leading and pastoring. And I have prayed for other pastors and churches in Marin County. Only a small percentage of this county will file into our gatherings this morning. This is a county with many Sunday morning options for "worship." The Christian churches need to get used to the idea that we're not people's only, or even primary, choice for spiritual growth.
God, meet us in our gatherings - all of them. Help us to better understand You, Your Story, and our place in that story. For when we understand You, Your Story, and our place in that story, we will better understand ourselves. Open our eyes to Your activity around us. Awaken us today. Surprise us today. Change us today. Amen.
