I was asked by Leadership Journal to join Dallas Willard in an interview regarding his writing's impact on spiritual formation. If you don't know who Dallas Willard is, he has been a professor of philosophy at USC for 40 years, he is the author of four very important books on the spiritual life: Hearing God, The Spirit of the Disciplines, The Divine Conspiracy, and Renovation of the Heart. He is being refered to as our country's C.S. Lewis.
His book, The Divine Conspiracy has been the single most influencial book I have ever read. As I was reading what Dallas wrote in that book I felt that I was having a "Born again, again" experience. The thing that was so compelling about what Dallas writes about is the essence of Jesus' gospel which is about the availability of life in God's presence and activity now, not just when you die. The gospel I had been taught placed a greater emphasis on what happens when you die than what can happen when you are alive.
We were interviewed for 3 hours on a number of subjects: the church, spiritual formation, the Bible, currrent culture, etc. Leadership Journal will have quite a challenge boiling this all down to a journal article. I am not sure when the article will come out but watch for it.
